den Analytical is proud to announce ground-breaking developments in the field of plasma medicine through its state-of-the-art atmospheric plasma technology. As a leader in analytical instruments, Hiden is at the forefront of research into the therapeutic uses of “cold” atmospheric plasmas for enhancing wound healing and potentially inhibiting tumour growth.
Recent advancements have highlighted the use of atmospheric plasmas in medical science, where the integration of plasma physics has led to innovative treatments for infected wounds and pathogen-related skin diseases. Cold atmospheric plasma devices, specifically designed for these applications, employ a small flow of gas ionised by either DBD or DC type plasma sources to deliver therapeutic effects directly to the treatment area.

High mass analysis of hydrated cluster species

Cold atmospheric plasma treatments have demonstrated significant success in accelerating the healing of infected wounds by effectively reducing the bacterial load at the wound site. This allows for an uninterrupted healing process, largely due to the beneficial actions of oxygen and nitrogen ions, along with UV radiation produced during the treatment.

A key component of Hiden Analytical’s contribution to this field is the HPR-60 MBMS (Molecular Beam Mass Spectrometry) system. This instrument is instrumental in characterising the plasma used in medical treatments, allowing for precise adjustments of power, gas species, and flow rates. The HPR-60 MBMS provides detailed analysis of both the mass and energy of plasma ions, ensuring optimal performance and efficacy of plasma treatments.

The HPR-60 MBMS’s unique three-stage skimmer cone arrangement creates a supersonic “silent” region that preserves the integrity of sampled species, enhancing the accuracy of mass and energy analysis to ultra-high vacuum conditions. Additionally, the system’s compatibility with the EQP and EPIC range of mass spectrometers, supporting mass options up to 5000 amu, makes it exceptionally suitable for analysing complex hydrated cluster species found in atmospheric plasma processes.

Hiden Analytical is excited to continue its research and development in this transformative area of medicine. The company is committed to providing innovative solutions that improve health outcomes and advance medical treatments globally.
